Tropical Storm Fay Projected Path

Visitors of the Florida Keys began evacuating early Sunday as Tropical Storm Fay prompted forecasters to issue a hurricane watch for the area.

Emergency officials asked visitors to evacuate the chain of islands starting at 8 a.m. as the storm neared Cuba.

Key West Mayor Morgan McPherson said as many as 25,000 visitors could be leaving.

Fay could be near hurricane strength when it reaches central Cuba on Sunday night, according to the 8 a.m. ET advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

Fay, with maximum sustained winds of near 50 mph (80 km/hr) and higher gusts, was heading west-northwest about 12 mph, forecasters said. It is expected to turn north-northwest by late Monday. The center of the storm was about 100 miles (160 km) from Camaguey, Cuba, at 8 a.m., forecasters said. Fay was expected to be near the southern coast of Cuba later in the day.

The storm is expected to cross the Florida Keys on Monday night, becoming a hurricane before it reaches Florida's Gulf Coast. However, because hurricane movements are erratic, long-range forecasts can vary. The storm will become a Category 1 hurricane if its winds reach 74 mph.

Residents of western Cuba, Florida and the Florida Keys should monitor Fay's progress, the hurricane center said. Florida Gov. Charlie Crist pre-emptively declared a state of emergency Saturday, and told reporters he had partially activated the state emergency management office. He urged Floridians to ready themselves for the storm.

Shell Oil said Saturday it was evacuating 200 people from the Gulf of Mexico as Fay approached.

Vijender Kumar through to quarter-finals

NEW DELHI: Vijender Kumar beat Thailand's Angkhan Chomphuphuang in the 75kg middle-weight bout to advance to the quarter-finals of boxing competition at the Beijing Olympic Games on Saturday.

Vijender beat Angkhan 13:3 in the round of 16 to join two more Indian boxers Akhil Kumar (54kg) and Jitender Kumar (51kg) in the quarter-final stage.

Vijender Kumar had beaten Jack Badou of Gambia in the round of 32 to advance to the pre-quarterfinals.

Earlier, Jitender Kumar swamped his Uzbek counterpart Tulashboy Doniyorov 13-6 in an ill-tempered bout to amble into the quarter-final of the 51kg event on Saturday.

Jitender, on his maiden Olympic trip, thus became the second Indian boxer to put himself just one win away from an Olympic medal, following in the footsteps of cousin and mentor Akhil Kumar who reached the 54kg quarter-finals on Friday.

Jitender meets three-time European champion Russian Georgy Balakshin in the quarter-finals on August 20. The Indian had lost to him in 2007 World Championship by just one point.

Indian Independence Day

Indian Independence Day (Hindi : स्वतंत्रता दिवस) is celebrated on August 15 to commemorate its independence from the British rule and its birth as a sovereign nation on that day in 1947. The day is a national holiday in India. It is celebrated all over the country through flag-hoisting ceremony . The main celebration takes place in New Delhi, where the Prime Minister hoists the National Flag at the Red Fort and delivers a nationally televised speech from its ramparts. In his speech, he highlights the achievements of his government during the past year, raises important issues and gives a call for further development. The Prime Minister also pays his tribute to leaders of the freedom struggle.

Celebrations :
Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs take place in all the state capitals.15th August is a National holiday of India. In the capital New Delhi In the cities around the country the Flag Hoisting Ceremony is done by politicians belonging to that constituency. In various private organisations the Flag Hoisting Ceremony is carried out by a Senior officer of that organisation. Schools and colleges around the country organise flag hoisting ceremony and various cultural activities within their respective premises. Families and friends get together for lunch or dinner, or for an outing. Housing colonies, cultural centres, clubs and societies hold entertainment programmes and competitions, usually based on the freedom theme.

Salute Movie Review

The movie was much hyped and much awaited movie for all the fans of Vishal. But the script in his film gets lost in the middle and then emerges out from nowhere. Although the movie is scripted to highlight a strict cop, the narration and the screenplay are not perfectly up to the mark. Though the fans of Vishal and Nayan get disappointed by the story, the on -screen chemistry between the lead brings some soothing breeze to the audience.

Story

The story begins in the first frame showing Satyam (Vishal) as a strict law abiding police officer who goes according to the law full procedures. He is against non-violence and believes that every culprit who evades law must be punished in accordance with the Justice and the Indian penal code. He is also against the Encounter police which the present day cops employee to eradicate the anti social elements.

In the meantime the political scenario in the state changes and a well known politician with an evil background is made the Chief Minister (Kota Srinivas Rao) of the state. He in order to reduce his enemies hires a killer on contract and hands over them all then name who have to be eradicated from his path.

Incidentally, the Chief Minister discovers that his job is being made easy, as an unknown killer is on a killing spree in eradicating the CM’s enemies.

Then our powerful and strict police office Mr. Satyam is given the job to nab the killer. He is none other than Prathap which is a character played by the well known artists Upendra. Prathap is a former police officer who gets betrayed in his profession by some men who hold high post in the society.

Then the real fight begins between Satyam and Prathap. And the lawful police officer is keen to eliminate Prathap from the world in order to save some people. In the meanwhile, Divya (Nayantara) emerges on the screen as a crime reporter

Then the real suspense and thrill begin in the minds of the audience. What is the mission of Prathap? Who is Nayantara? And what happens in the end is the conclusion of the story.

Performance

Vishal looks superb with his six pack abs. He is going to get molested by young girls if he goes into the public. His well toned body adds more glitter to his tall, dark handsome resemblance. His character as a cop well suits him. But it can be concluded that for a dull subject like this, Vishal has wasted his voluble time.

Upendra has acted according to his character his serious role suits to his body language and well apt expressions according to the dialogues make him a versatile actor.

Nayantara is just limited to a brief role of a crime reporter. Her costumes in songs and her dresses in the scenes are really seductive. She is like a glam doll to attract the mass audience.

Kota odes his regular villainy acting very well and Brahmanandham backs the comedy element in this film.

The director has failed in some areas like presenting the story, comedy track and in the climax. The story becomes jumbled up and is so irritating in the end. The usual cop story is twisted in such a way that the audiences feel exhausted after the movie.

Songs are presented without any required situations and the music is also no at all impressive.

On the whole there is nothing new in this film and may be banking on Nayantara’s shapes and sizes. The film will run for 2 weeks at the most.

6th pay commision

New Delhi, Aug 14: On Thursday, Aug 14 the Union Cabinet apporved the Sixth Pay Commission Recommendations which was tabled on March 24 of this year.

A Cabinet was appointed to take the decision and special emphasis has been given to the armed forces and other establishments. According to Information and Broadcast Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, the revised pay scales will take effect from 1st January 2006. He added that arrears to be paid in two installments that is 40 per cent this fiscal and 60 per cent in the next financial year. Revision of basic pay for Lieutenant Colonels, Colonels, Brigadiers and equivalents have also been approved.

The Minimum basic salary was raised to Rs 7,000 from Rs 6,660 per month as recommended by the Commission. The minister also added that special allowances will be provided to Army commandoes and their Naval and Air Force equivalents.

Expenditure Secretary Sushma Nath, who was present alongside Dasmunsi said that average increase in pay 21 per cent. Dasmunsi added, "Financial implication of Pay Commission on General Budjet is Rs 15,700 crore; and Rs 6400 crore on Railway Budget in 2008-09."

Abhinav Bindra (born September 28, 1983) wins a Gold for INDIA for the first time in Olympics in Shooting event. 11 august 2008 10:00Am Indian time can be written in golden history He scored 700.5 points leaving behind china and Finland for the silver and bronze.

Till 6th round Abhinav was on 3rd position and on 7th and 8th round he was on 2nd position and after 9th round he was in tie with finland with first position.Till 9th round abhinav was consiting shooting 10.5 10.3 and 10 above and the final round the 10th round a superb shoot 10.8 to end up in gold what a sight...... It was our Abhinavs day,marvaleous work done by him.

The bronze medal was won by Finland’s Henri Hakkinen, who was leading the field after the qualification round, but was unable to hold off Bindra and Zhu in the final.

Bindra held his nerve to score 10.8 on the 10th and final shot, while Zhu shot 10.5 and Hakkinen fell back with a poor score of 9.7.

The last shot was a superb shot from Bindra.What a way to open the account congratulate him guys he made our flag fly high and once he won the stadium was all filled with Indian songs.

The beauty queen has been caught in a nude scandal after photos of her modelling naked for a jewellery firm surfaced.

The 22-year-old Venezuelan beauty queen modelled for the raunchy pictures before she signed up as a Miss Universe contestant, reports Contactmusic.

However, Miss Universe Organisation officials have decided not to penalise Mendoza, insisting that the candid photos were not pornographic.

The officials said that the photos are "artistic in nature, and they don't have an ounce of pornographic content to them."

Story

A one line story, the film begins with a small village in Punjab which has Happy Singh (Akshay) the good natured sardar who always wants to help but ends up doing a lot of trouble and destruction. So much so that even his friend Rangeela (Om Puri) has complaints, the village is unable to bear the chaos caused by Happy but then all of them love him for the fact that he always helps others and is a very kind person. However, they want to see him away from the village to save themselves from the trouble and in this process they decide to send him to Australia to get back Lakhan Singh known as Lucky (Sonu Sood) to the village along with his group- Raftar Singh (Sudhanshu), Mika (Javed Jaffrey), Guruji (Kamal Chopra), Pankaj Udhas (Yashpal Sharma). Happy is accompanied by Rangeela who is reluctant to go and due to a freak misunderstanding they end up in Egypt and not in Australia. Happy sees Sonia (Katrina) there and falls in love with her. However, both Happy and Rangeela make it to Australia and catch up with Lucky who is the most dreaded underworld kingpin but before that Happy is given asylum by the owner of a flower shop (Kirron Kher). As fate would have it, a freak accident has Lucky ending up with a disorder and a misunderstanding leads Happy to become the King. On the other hand, the rose lady is expecting her daughter who happens to be Sonia along with her boyfriend Puneet (Ranvir). She tells Sonia that they are very rich and now is in a fix as to how to tell her the truth. Happy steps in and tries to set things right and is shocked to see Sonia and that too with her boyfriend. What happens from there forms the rest of the story.


Presentation

The director has come up with a wafer thin plot and though the presentation and narration are alright, the script is weak and dialogues are stale. Screenplay is just about okay and cinematography was good at key locations. The art department and costume department have done a very good job and the music was good with three numbers while others were just okay. Editing could have been a lot better to make things more attentive. Akshay Kumar was his original best and appeared at ease with his new get up and the act of getting sympathy was tried again like 'Namastey London' but not that effective. Katrina is having something magical in her diet since she is getting hotter and hotter with each day. She has improved in her expressions and dialogues. Sonu Sood was expressive though his role was a bit dumb for the major portion, Yashpal Sharma gave his share of laughter while Sunil Pahwa and Kamal Chopra did okay, Sudhanshu could have been better, Javed Jaffrey's role was a bit childish and did not actually achieve the humor point as it was expected, Om Puri was mechanical and Kirron was average. Neha Dhupia came out with some exotic appearance and she was too sexy with her short minis and luscious legs. Ranvir was regular.


Conclusion

The film has been very rich in its presentation but then without proper depth and a substantial plot its impact will be less. While the first half of the film shows the comedy of errors, the second half adds a dose of sentiment and finally a weird climax which looks stupid. Agreed that such movies must not be seen with logic but the magic of films like 'Welcome' was nowhere seen in this movie and despite having some really strong artistes like Yashpal Sharma, Om Puri, Ranvir nothing was extracted out of them. One really wonders why the Snoop Dog song which was boasted about with hype has to be given at the end credits when the theatre is practically empty. The film might make money due to its heavy star appeal and grandeur of scenes but the truth remains that it is a stale, lifeless, disconnected movie with no flavour in it.

Two people have died and five injured in a blast that took place in Kolkata on Sunday evening.

The blast took place in Shobha Bazar area of north Kolkata.

The bomb was found in a garbage dump by ragpickers.

Kolkata Police has said that it's not a terrorist act and appealed to the public not to panic.
